August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, and honestly... it couldn’t be a better time to talk about something I see all too often behind the chair: hair loss. Whether it’s more hair in your brush, a wider part showing up in photos, or just a general feeling that “something’s off,” you’re not imagining it and you’re definitely not alone....for sure!

Hair loss in women is way more common than most people realize. And, I see it weekly in our Head Spa at Hairloom and also behind the chair. The problem is, we often don’t talk about it until it feels like it's taken over our confidence—and by then, we’re overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. And, prolonging treatment can make reversal harder and more time consuming...and...not to mention $$$



As a Certified Associate Trichologist and Holistic Scalp Facialist, I work with women every day to uncover what’s really going on. And let me tell you: there’s always a reason, and in most cases, there’s something we can do about it.


So if you’re shedding more than usual, here are a few things that could be at the root of it:


First—Let’s Talk About Stress

Major life shifts, emotional trauma, burnout, or just chronic overwhelm? These can shock the hair cycle and trigger what’s called telogen effluvium: basically, delayed shedding that shows up months after the stressor. It’s common, and it’s usually reversible but it still needs support.


Hormones. Yep, They Matter.

Postpartum, perimenopause, thyroid imbalances, PCOS: hormonal shifts play a huge role in women’s hair health. One of the biggest red flags I see? A part that’s gradually getting wider or scalp showing more at the crown.

Nutrition Might Be Playing a Bigger Role Than You Think

If you’re low in iron, vitamin D, B12, or protein, your hair will absolutely feel it. Hair isn’t vital for survival, so if your body is lacking something, your hair is one of the first places to pay the price. (Have you had bloodwork done lately?)


Your Scalp = The Soil

If your scalp is inflamed, clogged, flaky, or sore, that’s a sign it needs attention. Healthy hair starts here. Think of your scalp like skin, it needs detoxing, nourishing, and proper circulation to support strong follicles.


Genetics... but That’s Not the Whole Story

Yes, female pattern thinning is a thing. And again, that widening part is usually the first clue. But just because it runs in the family doesn’t mean you can’t slow it down or support healthier regrowth. There are tools and treatments that actually work.


Medications & Underlying Health Issues

Certain medications (even common ones like antidepressants or blood pressure meds) can affect hair. Autoimmune conditions like lupus or alopecia areata can too. This is where digging into your health history really matters.

Overstyling, Tight Styles, or Chemical Damage

Sometimes it’s not internal it’s what we’re doing to our hair. Traction alopecia from tight styles or breakage from harsh products can make it feel like you're shedding when it’s really damage. Either way, your hair’s asking for a break.
